Having been always curious about the anime adaptation of this title, I thought I give this a chance when I saw it being released in the US.

First of all, although it has that prominent "Parental Advisory" label on the cover, I thought I've seen more in other mainstream graphic novels. I guess it has more to do with the novelty of our protagonist and heroine being a professional dominatrix, in addition to being (what they call) a "ghost talker". But for those reading this book in hopes of getting a secret kink are in for a disappointment. Although the cover prominently displays Misaki in her "work" clothes, this series is primarily, through and through, about supernatural mysteries. Sort of like Ghost Hunters on the Sci Fi Chanel.

Each chapter is devoted to a single mystery/story, so this makes for each volume to have a small number of chapters, each pretty long. Volume one contains two chapters: Hanging Mansion (a story of random suicides all occurring in the same abandoned apartment room) and Bear Po (a mystery of a murdered child and her suicided mother).

So far, each chapter was pretty straightforward in terms of mystery and conclusion. Maybe once the series gets in its groove the plot will pick up its pace and we might also find more about everybody's past.

One additional point of fact. The main character, Saiki Misaki, in addition to being a SM paranormal specialist, is also an albino with white hair and red eyes. Unfortunately, this was not a fact that was made clear to the reader (other than the cover) due to the b/w nature of the art.

As opposed to Vol 1, this volume has definitely ratched up the action, paranormal, and the fan service. Also, the stories in the volume seem to be less about being self contained and instead the beginnings of a greater mystery.
We also learn a little more about everybody's pasts.

Definitely not for children, but it is an enjoyable suspenseful thriller.

Volume 3 of Ghost Talker's Daydream seems to be a case of one step forward, two steps back, as the sense of darkness and danger seemed to have disappeared, to be replaced with a heavier dose of fan service. This is not to say that the stories in this volume were any bad. Some like "Convolvulus" had a feeling of sad melancholy that would have been cheapen had the story went towards the slasher route. But the two tales that bookended it, "Coming Out" and "Ghost Taxi" felt more was focused on the build up of the story as the ending was more of a case of Deus ex Machina (or more appropriately "Misaki ex Machina") as the heroine would appear and solve the case.

In addition to the three stories, was a bonus chapter called "So It's Low," a bizarre gag chapter involving Soichiro. The less said about it, the better.

As usual, the art is well drawn, especially in this case where the "Explicit Content" sticker actually earns its presence on the cover.
