Orben has been my favorite joke-writer since I first discovered him in the early 1950s. Orben started out as a magician and as a comedy writer for magicians, ventriloquists, and masters of ceremonies during the 1940s and 1950s.
After making a name for himself with his gag books for performers like himself, many comedians and humorists in the early days of television took note of him. He became a comedy writer for Dick Gregory, Jack Paar, and Red Skelton. After that, during Gerald R. Ford's presidency, Orben served as the Director of the White House Speechwriting Department.
Now an octogenarian, Orben is still writing joke books.… (mer)
