Around half-way into the book, I was already impressed by it. It tells the story of the inception and nurturing of a high-altitude biodiversity reserve aka national park, but it does not shy away from discussing the very difficult trade-offs and conflicts inherent in this activity. Sanjeeva Pandey used to do a little bird watching with me around the National Forest Academy (FRI) campus in the 1980's, where I was one of the faculty; what I was unaware of was his background with his botanist father and his academic history, which he has shared so well in his epilogue. His subsequent achievements, and the breadth and depth of his activities and association with people around the world, are impressive. The text, and the photographs, clearly bring out the twin concerns of the foresters and the academics involved: nature conservation and social equity. There are very good chapters especially on the birdlife (mainly by Gaston) and mammals. The authors have been extra careful in recording meticulously the source of each of the photographs, right down to the camera trap teams and forest guards level, which reflects their general sense of responsibility and concern for the field people. This may not be a coffee-table book, as the photographs are not that opulent, but with its practical, boots-on-the-ground approach, and its resounding endorsement of international cooperation at the personal level, it is a valuable addition to the conservation literature.… (mer)
