As mentioned in my review of Lynn Peppas' Holi - an informational library-bound book for younger readers - there is a dearth of good storybooks about the Hindu Festival of Colors, so I was quite excited to read Meena Pandya's book, which I had to request through Inter-Library Loan. Here, the story of Prince Prahlad - who angers his demon-father, King Hirnakasyapu, by declaring the God Vishnu as the strongest being in the world; and who endures his father's many attempts to have him killed, including the episode that gave the holiday its name, in which he survives the fire into which his Aunt Holika takes him - is told by a mother to her son.

The device of a story within a story works well enough in Here Comes Holi, providing a good introduction to the tale for which the festival is named. Less attention is given to the customs of Holi itself - the practice of throwing colorful powders, for instance - although the author does touch upon such matters in her brief afterword. I have to admit that I wasn't all that impressed with Pandya's narrative, which sometimes felt a little forced to me, or her illustrations, which were colorful, but blurry. All in all, this was rather disappointing, both as an informational title, and a storybook. I liked the cover-art (probably my favorite thing about it), and think it would be a good selection, for those looking for a basic understanding of the Prince Prahlad story. But Holi never really comes alive, and the reader doesn't really get a feel for its significance. I guess I'll have to keep looking for good Holi-themed titles for children...
