Funny how these GoodReads thingies always seem to just list one author. This bk is a collection of Rants: "Voices of Desperate Illumination 1558 to Present" edited by Bob Black and Adam Parfrey. It's published by Amok Press & Loompanics - from the days when Parfrey was still associated w/ Amok before he split off & created Feral House. This is a thorough collection from an eclectic group.

This book is like the band Fear or Crispin Glover's career, you forget what's supposed to be funny and what's not, I guess that's the risk you run with high-concept irony. The layout and design are all incredible but the vibe is kinda "heroin humor," honorary half star cause I read the whole thing anyway and am psyched to have it.

The sixties saw an explosion of pulp novels, from high literature in disguise to stuff on display here. Shameful!

'Sin-a-Rama' is a fun flip-through -- the essays at the beginning did not really hold my interest -- with a very interesting appendix of authors and pseudonyms and publishing companies. For obvious reasons a lot of contemporary records weren't preserved concerning this particular branch of the industry.

The covers were bizarre fun, the excerpts shockingly untitillating. After reading 'Pulp Friction' I'd hoped to see more than a dozen or so of the gay sleaze novels, but I'll have to look for a more selective collection.… (mer)

More picture than history (and that's just fine with me), Sin-A-Rama provides an overview of the era of the sex paperback. We do get some history, and some pretty entertaining biographies of various writers and publishers, but totally worth it for being as close as I'm ever likely to get to Clyde Allison's James Bond parodies featuring the intrepid Agent 0008. You will be mine, Platypussy, oh yes, someday you will be mine.
