As a female, this part of basketball never impressed me; I thought the players were "showing off". How little I know! But to the author of Year of the Dunk, Asher Price, it became a project for him. Could he do a slam dunk? How much determination woluld he need to improve himself over a year's time to be able to do a slam dunk?
The author went through many physical tests and limits, even after being diagnosed with cancer. Eventually, healed, his journey took him to a lab in England, and to meeting many athletes, scientists and physiotherapist in his exploration of his potential.
This was an exciting book to read and I had a hard time putting it down as I follow Price's journey. I will always think of the slam dunk in a new admiration now, realizing it isn't as easy as athletes make it look. The author gave me a new, thorough understanding of how a person remakes himself and responds when attempting to reach the limits of his potential.

I heartily recommend this book to any family with an interest in basketball and any athletic person as a gift for them to know what really constitutes determination to finish a project.

I've had this book on my shelf for a while-it's an early reviewer book that didn't actually come in the mail until many months after it was supposed to-and my school's reading competition has bonus points for reading a book about basketball, so I was inspired to pick this up finally and get some extra points for my classroom!

Price tells the story of his year spent attempting to train his body and mind to be able to dunk a basketball. Along the way, he reveals personal stories about his and his family's life, as well as delving into the history of basketball, and jumping in general.

As a huge basketball fan, I found this book most interesting when it focused on the basketball aspect of things, but in general, this was a good, quick read, with some real impactful emotional moments.

I enjoyed reading Asher Price's "Year of the Dunk". The author deftly weaves in the science of the dunk with his own experience playing basketball. Although this book is about basketball in particular, I feel like anybody can apply the lessons it presents to their everyday lives.

This was a pretty quick read but I found it really interesting. I like the exploration of how much of our talents and skills are we born with and how much can be cultivated. I'm not going to lie, I've always wondered if i put in the effort if I would be able to dunk....
