Culturegrams Database is made up of four editions: World, Kids, States (U.S.A.) and Provinces (Canada).

The Kids edition is presented in fun, coordinated colors. Children can select a county by menu or by clicking on the world map. Information categories for each country includes language, history, climate, animals, food, sports, and life as a kid. Additional content such as photo galleries, videos, recipes, and currency calculator make the information interactive.

The reading level of text is appropriate for children 7 and up. Children have the option to listen to the information. Though the automated speech is stilted, it is an important option for audio learners, the visually impaired, or children too young to read the text themselves. Children can also listen to the pronunciation of the country and the national anthem.

Teachers will appreciate PDF links to Common Core standards supported by Culturegrams and activity ideas that span games, presentations, discussions, and creative projects.

The World addition is appropriate for middle school students and above. It has the same features as the Kids edition, but information is presented in much greater detail and complexity. The States and Provinces editions are also geared towards younger children, but middle school students will still find the information interesting.

Children will easily become absorbed in this well-organized and dynamic treasure trove of geographical and ethnographical research material. Highly recommended.

This database from ProQuest provides information on all of the world’s countries. There are also separate sections for the states in America and the provinces of Canada. The regular entries are suitable for middle and high school students, but there is a kids section for younger students where much of the same information is presented in a simple way. The information included ranges from the history and geography of a country to its cultural practices, along with all sorts of statistics.
This site would be great for use in a social studies classroom at any age level. It provides the sort of information that could help students write almost any sort of report on a country. Some of the interesting features include an option to build charts and graphs with data of the user’s choosing, as well as articles that are read aloud by a reading software. This database stands out due to the versatility of the information it includes as well as the bells and whistles.… (mer)

Culturegrams is an excellent resource for children doing country and culture reports. The information is enclcopedic in nature without being overwhelming and is aimed at an audience that needs interesting information but not overly technical details. Big negatives include not including any source information nor is there anyway to define words or link to other materials. For instance, in the Health section under Uganda, there is a mention of nodding disease but there is no definition of it and no links to help the student understand what exactly that disease is. Culturegrams does a good job of providing basic information, but a poor job of contextualizing it. Children grades 3-8 will find this database useful, but will probably need to supplement their learning with trips to places like Wikipedia. Recommended.… (mer)
