I have to thank my GR friends for letting me know that Ron Rash even exists!

Listened to this on audio (which, I admit is one of the weaker audio narrations I've heard). Took me a while to to get into the book, but when I did ---- what a good story.

Although the book is set in a small North Carolina town, it's as timely as ever (unfortunately..) It's a tale of the tragic consequences when ignorance, prejudice, and superstition are fueled by hate and pride.

This book has a beautiful lyricism and I loved the descriptions of music and birds.

4 solid stars.

I developed another Rash. This one took me back to the mountains of North Carolina. However, instead of meeting the good-hearted people of [b:The Cove|11807189|The Cove|Ron Rash|http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1340737438s/11807189.jpg|16760618], I was introduced to some of the most ruthless characters in literature.

Serena and George Pemberton have never met a living creature (human, animal, or plant) they do not wish to dominate (or destroy) for their own gain. With an element of suspense, Rash weaves a tale of ambition gone awry.

Highly recomended for fans of southern literature, those who like strong female characaters, or those who just like a darn good story.

4.5 stars.

Perhaps not my favorite Ron Rash, but that's kind of like saying "Well, it wasn't my favorite trip to Paris". It's still a trip to Paris, which means it's pretty damn good.

With themes of [b:The Secret Wisdom of the Earth|22217702|The Secret Wisdom of the Earth|Christopher Scotton|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1403541255s/22217702.jpg|41558303] and [b:A Land More Kind Than Home|12408149|A Land More Kind Than Home|Wiley Cash|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1332536334s/12408149.jpg|17389742], Rash tells the tale of a local Sheriff on the verge of retirement, land rights, environmental damage, and the plague of drug addiction. Each character with a back story.

More than in any of his other books, he also writes so beautifully about the natural world, I just have to stop and catch my breath. It's all right there if you just stop and look.

"Last week I brought the children to the meadow. How many different things can you see? At first, only three -- tree, grass, flower. Then as they moved around the meadow -- actually seeing -- over a hundred before they left. As I step out of the meadow after they leave I hear a crunch. Cicada sluff. What a gift! To shed one's old self so easily."

Ron Rash proves once again he is a master of southern fiction (as if there was any doubt) in his latest book "The Risen."

When erosion reveals human bones alongside Panther Creek in a small North Carolina town, brothers Eugene and Bill relive the fateful summer of 1969 when they met the wild and mysterious Ligeia.

While the novel is fueled with questions of "who dunnit?" and "what the heck happened?" its true strength is in its character study of two very different brothers, their tyrannical grandfather, and an untethered free spirit. Rash forces his readers to consider whether reprehensible acts are ever justifiable, and what, if anything, someone can do to earn redemption. He relies on his readers to draw conclusions and says just enough, without fully closing the circle -- which can make for an even stronger impact.

Highly recommended. 4 stars

Thank you to Ecco publishing and Edelweiss for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.
