Tactics for Criminal Patrol has three goals. The first is to provide patrol officers with a legal pretext for making a traffic stop. The second goal is to find probable cause for a vehicle search, or to manipulate the driver into a consent search. The third goal is officer survival – an officer who gets so engrossed in searching the vehicle that he loses control of the driver and passengers can wind up dead.
This is essential reading for law enforcement officers on highway patrol. And if you’re not a LEO, and would rather not be stopped and searched, you should read this. It is a very insightful and detailed book.
An example: a motorist stopped for speeding is not happy with the cop who pulled him over. He wants to argue, he wants to talk his way out of a ticket. If a stopped driver doesn’t argue, it probably means he just wants to get out of there quickly without a search. Honest citizens argue with cops; drug mules don’t.
Remsberg also details booby-traps that may be encountered during a vehicle search, including substances that will either explode or generate poison gas when field tested for drugs.… (mer)
