Little Gregory, an adolescent Gambel's quail, takes a long walk through Arizona's Sonoran desert to explore the plant life and animals there. He travels through his environment looking at indigenous flora, playing with other desert birds, and avoiding local predators before he makes it safely back to his family and nest. Sharon I. Ritt has written her fact-packed picture book with words that are to be sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques" - included is a CD to aid in learning the song. The first few pages take a while to catch up to the rhyme scheme, but it gets easier and more natural the further you read. Language and layout throughout the story connotes a very young audience; few words on each page in large print with certain words color-highlighted for emphasis, the exercise of putting the story to a familiar tune. Nadia Komorova's bright, detailed mixed-media and digital illustrations play interestingly with focus and perspective, but some animals look copy-and-pasted into their surroundings. Suggestions for pre- and after-reading activities, information about the author, illustrator, and publishing house are included in the back of the book. Recommended for libraries and classrooms in or around the Sonoran desert, otherwise, Additional Selection.… (mer)
