The Walled Kingdom av Witold Rodzinski
I read this before I went to live in China. It is a pretty decent overview of the scope of Chinese history, but when you cover so much in so short a space, a lot of detail and flavor goes missing. For instance, Jonathan Spence's In Search of Modern China, which is longer but covers a much shorter period, is a very compelling, engaging read.
