jwitt33 | 2 andra recensioner | Feb 25, 2023 | This is a Young Adult pick for those readers that love your less-than-typical leading lady, kicking butt and taking numbers all in the name of love, for friends and those that could have been more. There's the usual journey of learning to show others your true self regardless of what they might think. There's young love despite the fact that's it's hidden in more ways than one and by more PEOPLE than two. There's jealousy and reputation. There's rumors heard through the grapevine and the die hard search to cut through all the bull**** in order to get to the TRUTH of the matter not simply for truth's sake but also so the heart can settle. It's a labyrinth of feelings and emotions strewn across a familiar landscape made disconcerting by the mysteries running round like kids on a sugar rush. It all blends together into a story that's much bigger and better than you would ever first guess, and lives up to the buzz that's been building here of late. Though I had my gut feelings about who did what, the story was never transparent to where the journey to reach the certain end felt unnecessary. Definitely an author to watch.

GRgenius | 2 andra recensioner | Sep 15, 2019 | I was totally sucked in. But there are a number of faults in this book, and one is far worse than all the others: I knew who the murderer was 1/3 of the way through (chapter 11 to be exact ). It was infuriating watching them suspect all the wrong people and trust one person—the killer. His sudden hand of friendship in her direction was suspicious from the start—how could she have trusted him immediately, with all her trust issues? Her behavior was inconsistent.
There were other little things: She has completely incompetent/absentee parents, which I saw as a convenience for the author rather than an important part of the story. Mattie doesn’t speak, and the vast majority of what she gets from subtleties in the way he looks or motions or moves his face are surprisingly believable. But there are instances when it seems like she gets more out of his look than possible (or is she interpreting what she wants to hear?). I would have liked to have heard his voice once or twice rather than just her interpretation of it. Ropal probably could have tightened the mystery half of the book a bit.
Despite all my criticism I gave it a 3 because I did like it, after all. There are things Ropal does well. The romance, for instance—I was hooked and attached. So when the murder came it was devastating to both Cass and me. Some mystery elements were good—surprising—and would have maybe thrown me for a loop (Gobbers relationship w/Gav, for instance ) had the killer not been obvious from the start.
And since when are skaters the equivalent of greasers? Is that a thing?… (mer)

Cass is such a great heroine because she has depth and is multidimensional. You get a lot of background on her which helps you connect with her. Her friends, Mattie, Franklin and Rav, are great secondary characters. The plot is engaging and the mystery is interesting with all of its twists and turns. I enjoyed the story very much.
