4 Stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awe, it’s bittersweet finishing Ruthless Vows, the eagerly anticipated sequel to Divine Rivals. Overall, I enjoyed this sequel, while in my opinion, it wasn’t as good as Divine Rivals, it did keep me intrigued and delivered a satisfying conclusion.

What I loved ❤️:
* Chapter titles! I wish more authors did this. 🥰🙌
* Beautiful writing
* Roman and Iris: Their connection and love story is memorable and just super sweet.
* The war scenes were gripping and compelling. I liked getting more background on the gods.
* The themes of familial bonds and love resonate deeply, highlighting the strength found in togetherness and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

What I didn’t love:
* Not Enough of Iris and Roman: This sequel delves deeper into the war between the gods and it seemed to have overshadowed the central romance that was so cherished in Divine Rivals. Although, the sequel introduces new layers to its characters and plot, certain aspects seem underexplored or unresolved, leaving me with some lingering questions and a tiny sense of wanting more from the story’s conclusion.

Favorite Quotes:
“Write me a story where you keep me up late every night with your typing, and I hide messages in your pockets for you to find when you’re at work. “Write me a story where there is no ending, Kitt. Write to me and fill my empty spaces.”

“The magic still gathers, and the past is gilded; I see the beauty in what has been but only because I have tasted both sorrow and joy in equal measures”.

"You may not be a goddess, but nor am I a god. Despite our mundane lives, perhaps we can make our own magic with words."

"I believe I'm quite good at this."
"And what's that, Winnow?"
"At taking you by surprise, Kitt."

"I look forward to the next chapter. The one you will write in your story, as well as the one we write together."

I liked this book (enough that I will read the second) but didn’t love it. As a few others have said, this is a romance story (sweet and not hot) for the most part with a sprinkle of fantasy mentioned. It strangely did feel like a WW 1 or 2 setting rather than anything fantastical, with reporters using typewriters and ladies wearing skirts and heels. With that said, I did enjoy the letters exchanged back and forth and the feisty Iris. I did want to keep reading throughout the book and am planning on reading the next in the series. More wyverns and gods? Yes, please.… (mer)

So, so good! I am a huge fan of Rebecca Ross.🙌 I have read all of her books and I own ALL of them! #fangirl 🤣 The Queen’s Rising (her debut series) is still one of my favorite series and fantasy worlds. Also, she has clean romance which is hard to find in YA books.

Divine Rivals is a big win for me. Like her other books this story is extremely unique and unlike any other fantasy I’ve read before. The story follows the MC‘s, Iris and Roman, whom are rival journalist competing for a coveted position at the Oath Gazette. These rivaling journalist have magic typewriters (of which only 3 exist), yes, MAGIC TYPEWRITERS, so cool, and they find themselves reporting on the front lines of an escalating war between gods. Ross is really good about creating worlds that include a nod to Greek mythology yet are unique in their own right. The world almost feels like WW1 vibes but it also has gods and laylines where magic exists. It actually reminds me a little bit of Julie Berry’s, Lovely War novel in the sense that gods and mortals coexist. Anyhow, the writing is beautiful, especially the letters between the MC’s… so endearing, I just love them.❤️ The ending had me like 💔😳. So grateful that I didn’t read this sooner and I can jump right into the final book of the series!

So many favorite quotes:

“… But I know what it feels like to lose someone you love. To feel as if you were left behind or like your life is in shambles, and there’s no guidebook to tell you how to stitch it back together.” 💔

“But time will slowly heal you, as it is doing for me. There are good days and there are difficult days. Your grief will never fully fade; it will always be with you--a shadow you carry in your soul--but it will become fainter as your life becomes brighter. You will learn to live outside of it again, as impossible as that may sound. Others who share your pain will also help you heal. Because you are not alone. Not in your fear or your grief or your hopes or your dreams. You are not alone.” 💔

“It takes courage to let down your armor, to welcome people to see you as you are. Sometimes I feel the same as you: I can’t risk having people behold me as I truly am. But there’s also a small voice in the back of my mind, a voice that tells me, “You will miss so much by being so guarded.”

“I don't think you realize how strong you are, because sometimes strength isn't swords and steel and fire, as we are so often made to believe. Someimes it's found in quiet, gentle places.”

“You don’t know what’s coming in the days ahead, but you’re doing just fine. You are so much stronger than you think, than you feel. Don’t be afraid. Keep going.”

Probably 4.25. It was an enjoyable read, and I liked it better than the first one, but I don't know that the characters or the story will stick with me.
