It's Thanksgiving in the Hundred-Acre Wood, and Pooh and his friends offer up toasts in silly little rhymes to tell about the things for which they are most thankful. Snooze-fest.

Did you remember to turn your clock back before going to bed last night? In this story, Pooh doesn't and spends the morning wondering why his friends are blowing him off. Christopher Robin sets him right, but poor Piglet drops out of the story having been screwed over by Pooh's forgetfulness. Some effort should have been made to set that right.

When they find Rabbit baking a cake one March day, Pooh and Piglet decide for him that it should be a birthday cake and set out to throw a birthday party. It's sort of a surprise party in that they don't know who the party is for and are surprised when they find out there is a birthday to be celebrated. It might have been fun if over half the book wasn't wasted with them just handing out party invitations to their friends one by one.

On a side note, for years I thought I had all the books in the "Read with Pooh . . . All Year Through!" series -- three board books for every month of the year -- but I just found out their are four extra book-end volumes we weren't sent during our mail-order subscription. I was able to find this 40th book that ends the series, but I'm still looking for the three that begin it: The Months of the Year by Catherine Lukas, The Days of the Week by Catherine Samuel, and The Four Seasons by Sarah Albee. A collector's work is never done!

Christopher Robin returns from his first day of school and teaches Pooh some lessons on the alphabet and numbers. It's okay, but it just doesn't do anything for me. I'm not a fan of too much Christopher Robin in my Pooh books, actually.

Anyhow, it's a good day to read it at least as my daughter returns to college for her senior year. It's been 17 years since we first got and read this. book together. And if she weren't a thousand miles away, we would have read it together again today. But summer is over, and I'm back to solo reading on the Pooh Project.
