Available in the collections, Beyond the Aquila Rift and Deep Navigation.

Finally it seems that Alastair has gotten the multi-universe theory nonsense bug out of his system, had a good reboot and got back to his sensible story telling.   We thank thee oh gods of literature.

Yes folks, it back to some good old Alastair short story telling. Not much sci-fi going on in this, more a human nature thing.   But it's all good and i enjoyed it.

Next up in Alastair's bibliographic time line is Thousandth Night, which is the first book in the House of Suns trilogy.   I'm certainly looking forward to a bit of long-form Alastair after all these shorties.

Alastair Baffles Emporium of Wonders - Mike Resnick

"Seriously, how did you pull that off?” I persisted.
“Seriously?” he repeated, arching an eyebrow and seeming to look right through me to some interior spot that nobody was ever supposed to see. “You take two well-meaning but unexceptional lives, stir in all the might-have-beens and never-weres, baste lightly with the optimism of youth, the cynicism of maturity, and the pessimism of age, add a soupaon of triumph and a cup of failure, heat the oven with vanished passion, sprinkle with just the tiniest pinch of wisdom, and there you have it.” He smiled, as if totally pleased with his explanation. “Works every time.”

“I already told you,” answered Baffle with a smug smile. “You live in a changing universe, Master Silver. You must never assume that all things change at the same pace.”

(Conforme for lendo os outros contos desse livro, irei atualizando essa review.)

Basically space opera. Faster than light travel is assumed, the scenarios on invented planets.
I prefer "Hard" SF where the Laws of Physics still hold.

Got to mull this one...review to follow.

Mull it, I did, and I've written reviews for 800 page novels that were easier than this. This story is complicated, it is a tad frightening, and it is remarkably relevant. If you have ever wondered where technology is going and think it has become too invasive, you will find here your worst fears realized. What is remarkable is that you will, at the same time, get a different view of how useful or harmful this invasion can be.

It is a short story. I won't take you long to read it, and I promise you will be thinking about it hours and maybe days later. It poses some interesting questions and it has a twist that will whip you around. Give it a go.… (mer)
