This cookbook was my mum's and was indispensible in her kitchen for the basics and for those old fashioned dishes that stay classics. It also covers strange topics such as "Invalid Cooking" (which seems to be 1/2 cooked eggs and beef tea on the palatable side and strange arrowroot concoctions on the other). An Australian cookery classic.

Reading this book is like reading a history book. The recipes of a bygone time can tell so much about how people lived then. Amy Shauer extolls the virtue of refridgeration, tells us how to cook a pigs head, make your own condenced milk and how to make raw beef tea from steak for an invalid.Any recipe that is slightly fancy or uses rich ingredients is called 'French'.
