Conversations with Amelia by Kathleen S. Schmitt

Set in 1951 Texas, Hannah Heywood just wants to be an ordinary girl and fit in with her peers. She doesn't get along with her older Sister, her Mother is not handling the loss of her Father (during the war) well. Add to all this her Uncle who lives with them, is a lost soul trying to find his way after the trauma of being in the war. And an accused murderer who was set free, who could possibly be a danger to Hannah.

Hannah invents an imaginary friend, the famous "First Lady of Flight", Amelia Earhart. She has learned so much about her through her Uncle. These conversations Hannah has with Amelia is her way of coping with her dysfunctional family, and her recent move to Texas and "need" to fit into society.

A very original well written story. The "conversations" between Amelia and Hannah feel as if they were really happening. Hannah's naivety and innocence and the fact she is considered an "outcast" in society makes her lovable. There were enough plot twists and some surprises to add an air of mystery, and surprise that I really enjoyed.

I feel avid readers, readers of any genre, will enjoy Conversations with Amelia.

Excellent book, well written, detailed yet easy to remember, the story of a young girl named Hanna, her family members, revolving around her personal conversations with a legendary, historical figure, Amelia Earhart. Hannah's ability to learn about life, war, flying, adventure, words of advice, usng the figure, Amelia, as authority and someone who is always there to listen to her. A bit of ministry is introduced with Uncle Andrew, and Grandpapa, both sound figures for advice and "a good word". Spyder Hill, her sister Cynthia, represent a higher standard of living. Civil defense is included, bombing, stance on war, nuclear armament, alongside the period of each President that presided during these times. A lot is covered but the manner of the book makes it easy to understand, and light-hearted, keeping Hannah a joyful person to follow. Thank you to the author.… (mer)

[Conversations with Amelia] by [Kathleen Schmitt] cover both the history of one of the greatest women, Amelia Earhart, but also the growing pains of a family after WWII. All seen through the eyes of Hannah, who is very naive in the beginning. Her confidant is an imaginary Amelia who gives her good advice and keeps her "flying right".

I have been looking forward to reading this book because Amelia Earhart is one of my favorite figures in history. I was not disappointed. It is well written and interweaves the history with the events happening in the story so that it has a really nice flow. I highly recommend reading this book.… (mer)
