Allmänna fakta

A planetary romance set in an ice-bound system where the original human colonists adopted a complex and strict moral code. Breaches in this code are punished by extreme ostracism, to the effect that the person is declared "dead", as is anyone who acknowledges or interacts with them. The ostracised, who are known as "ghosts", live in ghettos - the "Necropolis" - and can only be communicated with through intermediaries, unsurprisingly called "mediums".

To make matters worse, the colony is divided into familial clans, themselves with complex hierarchies and relationships. The novel is told from multiple points of view; an off-world starship pilot, an in-system pilot who has renounced her clan allegiance (another part of the complex moral code which gives the renouncer more freedom of action), and a Medium contracted to one of the major families.

We spend the first third of the book in scene setting and introducing a large and varied cast of characters. But then, after an accident in a sport rather like a cross between dog-sled racing and Wells Fargo stagecoach racing (which I know was never a thing, but you get the idea), two of the families descend into a feud which gets totally out of hand. Only through a degree of escalation into open warfare and intervention of the off-world starship captain (who has a military past) are matters finally resolved.

I enjoyed this, although I had to very much suspend disbelief at the complexity of the society and the families. There was a lot of world-building offstage which I would have liked to have seen more about. At the same time, this was very much a novel of the 1980s in terms of technology - no personal communications and computers are definitely built into desks and consoles. On the other hand, all the main protagonists and a number of the supporting cast are women, and this is taken as normal within the novel's setting.

The plot is resolved in part when the "ghosts" rebel, in part because the family Patriarch who has occupied their city is so hidebound that he would not break the Code of recognising ghosts, and to react against them when they break curfew or actually invade his military headquarters would actually put him in breach of Code and require his own ostracising even at the price of his own military defeat. A resolution follows fairly quickly; I personally found this section a bit rushed, but by1980s standards a 370-page novel is a bit long, and I suspect there was a publisher's editor suggesting that the author keep the length down. Nowadays, a 420-450 page novel wouldn't be such a shock, which I think this book would have worked better as. Still, I found the novel engaging and the setting well-realised.

There are the recently, uncomfortably reunited trio of salvagers, two layers of Ancient space civilizations, the remnants of 2 dark times and a baddy who is after the same relicts as the good gang, but for civilization destroying purposes. Just over the edge of interesting enough except during the too frequent navigational sequences which are burdened with techno-garble.
Physically, the trade paperback that had been bound for library use with clear stiff covers was difficult to hold, sharp edged and pointy cornered.… (mer)

Back in the 1990s, there was a time when I considered Melissa Scott appointment reading, when she was writing space fiction with a filigree of cyberpunk. Situations change though and Scott fell out of my reading rotation, mostly because I don't read tie-in novels and Scott's idea of fantasy didn't appeal to me.

Flash forward 30 or so years, and one day I was wondering what Scott has been up to, in part when thinking about a constellation of female writers from the 1990s who are either out of circulation, or are no longer with us, and discovered "The Order of the Air." My thought being this should be right up my alley.

Unfortunately, the execution did not match my hopes. The high concept is cool. The prose is better than workmanlike. The characters are at least acceptable. The big problem is that this story has all the narrative snap of a wet noodle. I plowed through it but the overall execution doesn't make me want to rush right out and hunt down the rest of the series. To put it another way, all the components were there for a thriller, or a story of gothic atmosphere, but Mmes Scott & Graham just didn't seem to have that sort of novel in them, and that's unfortunate. Silvia Moreno-Garcia would have had a field day with this material.

My final thought is that narrative drive might always have been a problem with Scott's novels, even in her prime writing for Tor, and that's why I don't remember those novels better.
