Holocaust survivor - Kort biografi
- Helen Sendyk was born Helcia Stapler to a large Jewish family in Chrzanow, Poland. Of her parents, seven siblings, a brother-in-law, nephew and grandmother, only Helen and two others survived the Holocaust. About 60 members of her extended family died. Beginning when she was 13, Helen was taken to a series of Nazi concentration and slave labor camps, including Gogolin, Faulbrück, Reichenbach, and Langenbielau. After the war ended, she and her older sister Nachia spent a long time searching the towns of Poland for news of their family. They tracked down one brother, Vrumek, in the British Mandate of Palestine, but never learned officially of the fate of the others. Finally the sisters emigrated moved to the new state of Israel. Helen lived there for 15 years before moving to the USA with her husband Abraham, and settling in New York and then South Florida. Her critically acclaimed memoir, The End of Days, was published in 1992, and its sequel, New Dawn, appeared in 2002.
