Lots of gross and disgusting tidbits about medical practices in the 16th century. No real in depth info with this book though, just an overview of different practices and illnesses of the times.

My daughter and I are currently on rain forests in our educational pursuits, so we checked this book out. It's not a fantastic book for a younger child; there's too much information per page, and the information is above her head. However, the illustrations are bright and colorful, so we spent some time simply looking at the pictures, identifying various animals, and counting how many of each thing were on a page. One great thing about this book is that each page has a middle half page that shows you different things. My daughter loved that.

All in all, I think this is probably a decent book for older children, but not so much for a younger child to whom you just want to introduce what a rain forest is in broad terms.

Told from the point of view of the reader as Nicholas Knight,a 16th century barber surgeon's apprentice, it takes a humorous look at the diseases, surgery, doctor's medical opinions, birth and other medical situations one would experience during this time period. Every page is filled with exaggerated illustrations that support the text very well. The information is well written in a simple and funny way that even the most reluctant reader will enjoy this book. One of the many books from the You wouldn't want to.. series.… (mer)
