Julie Serano—trans woman, bisexual, femme activist, and author of the revolutionary, bestselling book Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity—has spent much of the past ten years challenging various forms of exclusion within feminist and queer communities. In Excluded, Serano examines the ways in which feminist and queer movements, while designed to challenge sexism, often simultaneously police gender and sexuality—sometimes just as fiercely as the straight, male-centric mainstream does—based on the premise that certain ways of being gendered or sexual are more legitimate, natural, or righteous than others. Feminists vocally condemn other feminists because of how they dress or for their sexual partners or practices. Among the queer activist community, lesbians and gay men have dismissed bisexuals, transgender people, and other gender and sexual minorities. Serano argues that these biases, whether conscious or unconscious, infect theories, activism, organizations, and communities—and worse, they enable people to vigorously protest certain forms of sexism while simultaneously ignoring and even perpetuating others. Excluded advocates for a new approach to fighting sexism—called “holistic feminism”—that avoids these pitfalls and offers new ways of thinking about gender, sexuality, and sexism that foster inclusivity.
Please come at least a couple of minutes early (before the store closes at 7 pm), so no one will need to come to the door to let you in. If you are late, though, there’s a doorbell to the left of the front door.
