Maurizio Serra

This was written, I'm pretty sure, in French by an Italian diplomat. This is in keeping with the character of Malaparte, he liked to run with a sophisticated crowd. It's also come out in Italian, Spanish, French, and Serbian. Maybe there is an audience for the book in English? Like most literary biographies, it details the life and times of the author and gives a rundown on his works. Serra believes that Malaparte, despite having been a fascist and a life-long narcissist, was a good person. I'm inclined to agree. Malaparte understood suffering and hypocrisy, and exposed them in his writing. In his books he wanted to prove how funny, urbane, and at the centre of the action he was personally but he was never holier than thou.

I found the information on Italian politics and literature here beyond me and a little dull. However, this is a very good biography of one of my favourite writers. 'Kaputt', about the Eastern Front in WWII and 'The Skin' About Naples under the Americans in WWII are clearly the best things he wrote. Serra takes us through his lesser-known books, some of which haven't been translated into English. The pick of these for me is Malaparte's last book, about his trip to Russia and China in 1956. Cosmopolite, né à Trieste, sujet de l'Empire pendant les trois quarts de son existence, « il préféra écrire mal en italien, ce qu'il aurait pu bien écrire en allemand », selon le mot perfide de son antagoniste, le poète Umberto Saba. Commerçant avisé, industriel prospère dans l'usine de vernis de sa belle-famille, il « entra à la Trappe » et s'éloigna de la littérature pendant un quart de siècle. Juif converti au catholicisme lors de son mariage, il resta agnostique et réclama des obsèques « sans prêtre ni rabbin ». Époux et père irréprochable, il rêvait de couper les femmes en morceaux et de manger leurs bottines. Foncièrement apolitique, il accueillit sans enthousiasme l'embrasement de 1914. Italien de cœur et de conviction, il comprit tôt que les troubles de l'après-guerre conduiraient à l'ère des fascismes. Très méfiant à l'égard de la psychanalyse, il a écrit pourtant le premier roman psychanalytique avec La conscience de Zeno (1923).
Découvert par les élites européennes, grâce à l'amitié de Joyce et de Larbaud, il eut à peine le temps de savourer cette reconnaissance tardive, et s'éteignit en laissant inachevé son dernier chef-d'œuvre, les Confessions d'un vieillard. Bref, Svevo reste largement une énigme. Un homme qui a fait de son œuvre le siège de sa vie, mais dont l'« antivie », qu'il voulait faire oublier, est encore plus révélatrice.
