Kamila Shamsie was also awarded the City of Dortmund's Nelly Sachs Prize (€15,000) in Sept. 2019, which was withdrawn after the prize committee became aware of the German parliament's May 2019 declaration that the non-violent Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel's apartheit treatment of the Palestinians was anti-semitic, and Shamsie's support for the BDS movement.

Recensioner

Magically brutal finishing stretch. The final two pages are heartbreaking. So good.

I think I might have liked this book more if the story didn't keep jumping ahead (and around) so much. It starts out in 1945 Nagasaki then suddenly leaps forward to India post WWII, the partition and Pakistan, the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan and eventually NYC post 9/11 with a few other stops along the way. There are some beautifully written and thought provoking passages though and I did like it.

This was a surprise to me - very refreshing to read. I was engrossed by the characters and the plotline, which was never predictable and didn't resort to tropes. Recommend!!

Enjoyable little story, as Aliya travels back home from America to India. Carrier of stories for her generation, she is enchanted with the concept of "not quite twins" until she finds out that she is the "not quite twin" with the scandalous Aunt Mariam. Having met a man from "the wrong side of the tracks", Aliya doesnt know if she will be the one to bring shame on the family
