He started composing music at the age of ten, and has produced a large catalogue of orchestral, chamber, and piano works, as well as music for ballet, theater, and film. Leonard Bernstein: An American Musician (Jewish Lives) av Allen Shawn

I thought this was a very enlightening and easily-read summary of Bernstein's life. It also seemed even-handed, acknowledging his genius and his abilities without ignoring his flaws and faults.

Professionally Bernstein was a conductor, pianist, composer and teacher. But, he was also a powerful cultural and political voice and symbol. The Jerusalem Post called this book “An engrossing portrait of a gifted and conflicted man.”

This is not the typical memoir; it's very detailed, almost like a textbook. This guy is really smart, but sometimes I missed how much his disorder affected him emotionally.
