Born the son of an English tavern keeper, the youthful Whitefield was "running on a full career to hell" as he himself put it, when God touched him.Dedicating his life to God, he literally burned himself out in the service in England and America. Whitefield addresses last audience at Newburyport, Massachusetts, standing on the stairway of a manse, speaking by the light of a flickering candle he held in his hand.
