Harry Sidebottom

There are very few biographies or histories of Heliogabalus, and very little of this sparse documentation is what a modern reader would consider to be "truth." The author tries his best to turn these deficiencies into a strength by examining the changing field of history from Roman times to the modern day. He also pads the book with general observations about emperors in ancient Rome, all riddled with British humor that does not quite map elegantly onto a scholarly work. Fróðleg umfjöllun um hernað í Evrópu á tímum Grikkja og Rómverja. Höfundur gefur ekki aðeins greinargott yfirlit yfir hvað vitað er um hernaðartækni heldur lýsir hann líklegri upplifun einstaklingsins. Hvernig samtímamenn sáu fyrir sér hernað og andstæðinga og hvernig hernaður mótaði samfélögin.
Ég var sérstaklega hrifinn af því hvernig Sidebottom tilgreindi hefðbundnar skoðanir fræðimanna, nýjar og gagnrýnar hugmyndir og tilgreindi að síðustu nokkra af kostum og göllum þessara athugana.… (mer)
