Upton Sinclair, a lifelong vigorous socialist, first became well known with a powerful muckraking novel, The Jungle, in 1906. Refused by five publishers and finally published by Sinclair himself, it became an immediate bestseller, and inspired a government investigation of the Chicago stockyards, visa mer which led to much reform. In 1967 he was invited by President Lyndon Johnson to "witness the signing of the Wholesome Meat Act, which will gradually plug loopholes left by the first Federal meat inspection law" (N.Y. Times), a law Sinclair had helped to bring about. Newspapers, colleges, schools, churches, and industries have all been the subject of a Sinclair attack, analyzing and exposing their evils. Sinclair was not really a novelist, but a fearless and indefatigable journalist-crusader. All his early books are propaganda for his social reforms. When regular publishers boycotted his work, he published himself, usually at a financial loss. Bunny Ross av Upton Sinclair

"Bunny Ross" är den direkta fortsättningen på "Olja", och vi får följa oljemagnaten Ross och hans son Bunny i deras vidare öden under den första delen av 1900-talet.
Sinclair skildrar med bravur den unge Bunnys inre stormar och yttre slitningar mellan sin socialistiska/kommunistiska övertygelse och sin fars kapitalistiska (sic.) handlingar.

Språket är stundom lite väl hurtigt, och kärlekshistorierna känns kanske inte helt äkta. författarens politiska engagemang gör romanen trots det tillräckligt intressant att läsa. Jag slås av hur de politiska argumenten är desamma (nästan) idag som för nittio år sedan.… (mer)

Olja av Upton Sinclair

"Olja" är en roman skriven på trettiotalet (tror jag), som handlar om oljeprospektering i Kalifornien under 1910-talet.

Jag lärde mig mycket om denna gren av handeln. Sinclair beskriver det främst från kapitalistens (sic) synvinkel, men han är tydligt intresserad av att framhålla arbetarnas situation också. Hantverket beskrivs, liksom en period av strejk. Det är en roman som överhuvudtaget beskriver stämningarna i Kalifornien i början på 1900-talet, och parallellerna till Steinbecks "Vredens druvor" är tydliga, även om den senare i mitt tycke är ett mästerverk, vilket "Olja" inte är.

Jag ger den en fyra, om än svag.
