This was a double surprise. I chose it as a multicultural folktale and discovered it was a bilingual book also. The illustrations were very engaging and the story was quite sweet with a couple searching for what they wanted most, a child. I really enjoyed this one.

Curricular Connections: This would a short but good example of a multicultural folktale to share in any classroom. Plus, it would be beneficial for any Korean ESL students.

A couple has married and grown old together, but they have had no children or grandchildren. One day, the husband comes upon a stream, and, after he drinks from it, he is a young man again. His wife, seeing the youth of her husband, goes also to the stream, drinks from it, and comes back a young woman. Their neighbor, a greedy, jealous old man sees what happened to his neighbors and goes to the fountain. But he doesn't come back, so the couple goes in search of him. They find his clothes by the stream, but instead of finding an old man, they find an infant. Apparently their neighbor drank to much of the water that reverts their age. So the couple decides to raise him as their own, teaching him to love, to not be greedy, and to not be jealous.
I love seeing the text in English on one page, and the Korean characters on the opposite page. Though my son doesn't speak a word of his original language (he was 4 months old when he came home), it is going to be a book that, when I'm a grandmother, I will send to my grandchild to keep their father's heritage in their lives. (I'll also send German and Norwegian, because those are the heritages and cultures in which he grew up!)
