Songlines of Richmond A Celebration of Performing… av Brooks Smith
This is a fun little book whose lively photographs and quirky vignettes reveal some surprising facts about Richmond’s musical and artistic heritage. What a discovery to learn that Elvis Presley played in Richmond before he became famous and that Bill Bojangles Robinson had a theatre named for him here. Everyone who enjoys music, the arts or history will enjoy this book, whether or not you’ve ever been to Richmond!
Since I live in one of the Hills of Richmond neighborhoods, I was delighted to learn more about its history as well as the history of our other "hilly" areas. But this book is not a dry recitation of facts. Its narrative is full of lyrical descriptions like this one on p.28:
“The Corner is not what it once was, but it abides. Beneath weather-beaten boards and tattered playbills, there remains the hint of swing, the sweet wail of bop and the shuffling boogie-woogie vibe of a last set played too long ago.” Gems like that, along with interesting vintage photos, are what makes this book such a little treasure.… (mer)

Written in rather a florid 19th century style which was odd considering the book was written in 2008. Not the best history in the world, but fun as a compilation of local facts and legends so it does what it says on the cover.
