Oh boy. I'm not quite sure what to think. On one hand, the humor was great but there was more than one downside.
I almost DNF'ed at chapter two. This is so awkward to even type but by the end of the second chapter, the (male) author had already spent six pages on periods. It was way too much. I kinda feel bad for whatever female he questioned to be able to write it.
Secondly, this is a middle-grade book and it was trash-talking people with different political opinions than the main character's family. This isn't about me taking one side or the other but rather, the fact that it got into politics from such a biased standpoint. Quote the book, "The political talk was the worst, because normally my father would have been the firry liberal in the mix, but this year, my most right-wing uncle was all, 'More guns! Less government! Yay, white people." Yeah. In a middle-grade book.
Third was the language used. This had stronger language than any other middle-grade that I've seen and many times even referenced stronger language.… (mer)

I'm not getting along with this author. At all. Very 'meh'. Peter reads like a 12yo.

You know what? I refuse to torture myself further.
And if you want to so much as meep at me to give it another chance - don't bother.

I've read a YA book with injury irrevocably affecting the protagonist's life a while back and it was 100 times better. After drinking what is left of his absent father's liquor, stealing and crashing his mother's car in the process of which he beheads a garden gnome, Alex Gregory is sentenced to community service at the local nursing home so he can learn some “valuable life lessons.” He winds up having to spend time with cranky Sol Lewis, who is suffering from emphysema but has a very interesting and surprising past, which will help Alex with his own guitar playing. The notes of the title come into play when in addition to his community service, Alex is required to write letters to the judge about his progress with Sol. During the course of the book, Alex discovers he has growing feelings for his best friend since childhood, Laurie, a “terrifying goth pixie” who practices karate and Chinese hand-weapon combat. He is unsure if she feels the same way about him, but know-it-all Sol makes them a couple by calling her Mrs. While some of Alex's life lessons and plot resolutions are a bit predictable and unrealistic, this touching, funny book is fast-paced and enjoyable.… (mer)
