A good book to impart the flavor of the California Missions era to 3rd or 4th graders. The old cook for the mission has died recently and Father Zavidea is needs a replacement. Three women apply for the position each presents a meal and proclaims a bit of philosophy regarding what is the key to the kitchen?
1.The key is the spices that go in the pot.
For food to be tasty it has to be hot.
2.The key to the kitchen lies in the sauce.

that keys are cast iron but stomachs are not.
Obviously this picture book is not for the youngest. It is a thought provoking book that would be found for kids to act out. It deserves a reprint and a place in every elementary school library in California.
