Author Rex Stout was born on December 1, 1886. A child prodigy with a gift for mathematics, Stout drifted as he became an adult, holding odd jobs in many places---cook, cabinetmaker, bellhop, hotel manager, salesman, bookkeeper, and even a guide in a pueblo. But his true talent lay in storytelling; visa mer he sold his first story, about William Howard Taft, in 1912. His most famous creation is Nero Wolfe, a 286-pound detective genius who, with sidekick Archie Goodwin, can often solve a case without leaving his room. It is the way in which the puzzle is solved that intrigues Nero Wolfe, who is much like Sherlock Holmes in his ability to use deductive reasoning. More than 60 million copies (in 24 languages) of Stout's books have been sold. Stout writes quickly, drawing upon a lifetime of impressions. He neither uses an outline nor revises; he lets his characters take over as the story develops. - After leaving the Navy in 1908, he became an itinerant bookkeeper and then worked as a sight-seeing guide, bookstore salesman, stablehand and hotel manager. Later he devised and implemented a school banking system which was installed in four hundred cities and towns throughout the country. In 1927 he retired from the world of finance and began writing. In 1941 he became chairman of the Writer's War Board, and in 1943 he was elected president of the Authors Guild. He was married to wife, Pola.

Some Buried Caesar - Spoilers i The Black Orchid (A Nero Wolfe Group) (mars 2021)

I’m becoming quite fond of the Nero Wolfe novels. This one was perhaps not quite as satisfying as the first one: I was barely interested in any of the characters save our protagonists and the cab driver; most were too shallowly rendered and the ones who weren’t were not likable. But it was a compelling ride and a fine read.
Decent enough mystery story. Not stellar, just OK all round - enjoyable, just nothing that stands out among other books. The denouement doesn't have the force it should because there are too many named characters who don't really do anything but you need to be aware of - I honestly didn't really recognise the culprit and I got a couple of place names mixed up. I'm well aware this is more my own fault than the books, but I do feel it could have been pared down.
Also I feel it's important to note the way race is handled in this book is... dodgy. I can buy that the use of the n-word by several southern sheriffs is intended as character rather than endorsing the use of it, but the way Wolfe treats the black characters in the book is at best pretty patronising although it's clearly intended to be a "non-racist" contrast. In addition, "blacking up" is a plot point. It's not down-right awful, but it's definitely not very good.… (mer)

This isn't a novel but rather a pair of novellas. In the first story, Black Orchids, Archie is sent by the sedentary Wolfe to the Manhattan Flower Show to spy on an exhibition of extremely rare black orchids. Wolfe is miffed because the breeder refused to sell one to Wolfe. Along the way Archie falls in love with a pretty girl inhabiting one of the diorama-like scenes set up by a nursery, which leads him to be on the spot when a murder occurs. Wolfe manages to solve the murder and snag a black orchid plant all in one afternoon, which is pretty good.
The second novella, Cordially Invited to Meet Death finds Wolfe and Archie trying to solve the murder of a fancy party planner, who is deliberately dosed with tetanus. She had originally consulted Wolfe about some anonymous letters that were sent to some of her clients, so Wolfe is motivated to find her killer since he wasn't able to prevent her murder. The black orchids show up on the coffin at the funeral, which is framed by Archie as a mystery — why did Wolfe send one of his precious on someone he barely knew? That mystery isn't solved, but since I couldn't see the point of it other than to provide a tenuous thread between the two novellas, I'm not bothered by the dangling plot point.
This isn't one of my favorites, but it's fine. I probably wouldn't have re-read it without prompting but I'm not sorry to have done so.… (mer)

The case shifts now to Dunbar's defense, as he has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Wolfe doesn't believe Dunbar would kill his future fiancee, but he discovers plenty of people in their lives who also disapprove of an interracial marriage - including Susan's own family. Only when a second person ends up dead does the answer finally become clear, and it's a race against time before a third person is in the killer's crosshairs.
This is about what you'd expect for Nero Wolfe Takes on Civil Rights. He infamously has no regard for women at all, so the question is but a theoretical one to him, but he has a rather unique point of view, as he is not a white American or of the class for whom this is such a thorny issue. He more or less stays out of the racial aspect, but it gets predictably ugly when the murderer shows their true colors.
I should like the idea of the final clue being a linguistic one, but honestly it felt like such a reach after 150 pages of tail-chasing that it falls a little flat for me. I'd consider this a pretty middle of the road offering for a series perhaps already past its prime. Worthy of reading, but maybe not one to specifically seek out.… (mer)
