I'll preface this with saying it's not the type of book that I saw myself picking up. But Summers is just that damned good!

The intensity of Monster started to ratchet up starting about halfway through the book, and ended with breakneck speed. Summers continued this same speed throughout Parasite with such ease that you couldn't help but want to read "just one more chapter." I found myself with about 1/3 of the book left at bedtime last night, but because of the sense of urgency in which Summers writes, stayed up far past my bedtime to finish. Jerod, the main character, is such a wonderful, likable character that you can't help but root for him. And while Jerod can get stuck in his own head from time to time, Gabriel, his partner, balances him perfectly. Summers has written a couple that you cannot help but cheer for, even in the worst of circumstances.

The Vertex series is definitely something anyone who likes action/adventure books should pick up. Now to wait for the third book in the series. Soren, write faster!

My review is for a copy I got in exchange for an honest review.

I will preface this by saying that this is not the kind of book that I would normally read. But that said, I am so glad that I had the chance to read this! Soren Summers has a way of what I like to call a "slow build", that takes you from your normal, everyday situation, and then adds tension and an all-out assault on your senses to where you cannot put the book down! While I do think the book started just a bit slow (in the first 20 or so pages) because of the information overload that has to happen in order to get you into the book, once the story gripped you, it refused to let you go.

I won't give the story away, but suffice to say that once Summers grabs you, he will not let you go until the very last page. And even then, he leaves you desperately wanting more. Your heart goes out to the characters Jarod and Gabriel, how Jarod is challenged at first, and then slowly builds trust for his new friend. How that slow build becomes frenzied passion, and then love. Though I got the first book for free as a reviewer, I happily paid money for the second and (preordered) third books, because Summers is just that damned good.

There's only so much you can say about this book without giving away the farm in terms of details, so how about we just go with a single word: Stupendous

I anxiously awaited [b:Paragon|34945743|Paragon (Vertex, #3)|Soren Summers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1493017082s/34945743.jpg|56217416] from the moment I put down the previous book in the series. I knew it was coming out this week, but was pleasantly surprised when my Kindle started downloading it at 9:01pm Sunday night. It was at that point that I knew I would get little sleep until I finished it.

Paragon opens with the same dystopian future of Pleasance, with the few remaining survivors still living in the abandoned mall, the threat of zombie attack coming with every wail, every scratch against the wall. With as disturbing as what went on in [b:Monster|32315385|Monster (Vertex, #1)|Soren Summers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1475178378s/32315385.jpg|52944777] and [b:Parasite|34610878|Parasite (Vertex, #2)|Soren Summers|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1489713627s/34610878.jpg|55761314], you would think that [a:Soren Summers|15900734|Soren Summers|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1492914694p2/15900734.jpg] wouldn't have anything else in him to take us readers through the wringer. But oh yes, Summers does - and with a vengeance.

Summer's writing with the survivors in the Hive does something to you that brings in the walls; it's almost claustrophobic. So when the characters get outside of the walls of the Hive to go do some investigation, you can almost feel them as they sneak around every corner, and you can almost see what's hiding in the shadows.

Though I'm not a fan of zombies at all, I'm a serious fan of Summer's Vertex trilogy, even if I had a few "Joey" moments while reading. For those of you that don't get the reference, it refers to Joey from Friends, who had to put the book he was reading in the freezer because it upset him so much. Except with me, my Joey moments came from Summers keeping me on edge, and then ratcheting the tension up even farther. I made myself get up, walk around for a few minutes, then went back to reading. And as I do 95% of my reading at bedtime, Summers has made sure that I've missed my regular bedtime for the last couple of days.

The characters that Summers created in the series are so real that it's like reading about a close friend. And the situations they get into, even with zombies, have real world life issues; one particular passage when Jarod is in peril, he does something that is so human, so perfect, that I'd hope I would do in that moment.

Even wrapping up all of the details with a nice little bow, Summers still has to get in a zinger at the end. I won't give it away, but I will say this - hold your breath until you see those three little letters on the page - END.

Such a good look into Vertex

One thing that the previous books in this series didn't do was properly go into Vertex, who they are, and how they became what they are. In Smolder, you get the perfect look into it from both the worker's perspective, as well as an anomaly. This book was equally hot as well as creepy at times. Definitely worth the read.
