Pretty dry reading, but I was extremely taken by the differences in the justice system between 1900 Paterson, New Jersey and now pretty much anywhere in America, some differences better and some worse. The story of a 17-year old girl who is drugged, raped and murdered by four "upstanding citizens" sounded like something from 1980's New York (think the Preppy Killer case). It was hard to read about the victim-blaming, in particular.

This is an engaging narrative of an unsolved murder case in early 20th century Missouri. From the beginning Ms. Tilley’s writing was descriptive and to the point. I could easily find myself picturing the scenes as she related the story. The photos added to the history. This is not just a listing of facts, it is a well researched and documented narrative that kept my interest throughout. Ms. Tilley’s interpretation of the incident and trial testimonies at the end was excellent.

I received a copy of this book from LibraryThing in exchange for a review.

This is the first book by Kimberly Tilley I’ve read. She did such a remarkable job of setting the Information down in a concise, yet understandable manner. She brought the characters alive and set the tone of the town of Savannah, Missouri where the murder occurred. She explained the court procedure and investigative abilities of the time. Tilley followed the case from before the murder took place to after the acquittal of Mrs. Richardson, who was accused of shooting or conspiring to shoot her husband, Frank Richardson, on Christmas Eve. Tilley ended by poking a few holes in the case, of pointing out a few inconsistencies, and giving a plausible explanation for what really occurred that fateful Christmas Eve…and why. I do believe that Mrs. Richardson got away with murder, although it is unclear who her cohort in crime was.
I found the story fascinating, and well researched, and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This is a meticulously researched book. It deals with the events preceding the murder of a rich entrepreneur. The usual suspects are his wife and her alleged lover(s). This is an ideal book for a book club, to discuss whodunnit. There is no accepted answer as to who killed him, but there are several equally credible possibilities, listed at the end of this very well-written book.
