- JOHN TIRMAN is the Executive Director and a Principal Research Scientist at MIT's Center for International Studies.
Tirman is author, or coauthor and editor, of twelve books on international affairs, including, most recently, The Deaths of Others: The Fate of Civilians in America’s Wars (Oxford University Press, 2011). Earlier work includes The Fallacy of Star Wars (1984), the first important critique of strategic defense, and Spoils of War: The Human Cost of America's Arms Trade (1997). In addition, he has published more than 100 articles in periodicals such as the The Nation, Boston Globe, New York Times, Washington Post, Esquire, Wall Street Journal, and Boston Review. From 1986 to 1999, Tirman was executive director of the Winston Foundation for World Peace, a leading funder of work to prevent nuclear war and promote non-violent resolution of conflict. In 1999-2000, Tirman was Fulbright Senior Scholar in Cyprus and produced an educational Web site on the conflict. He is a trustee of the Institute for War & Peace Reporting, and chair of the International Civil Society Action Network.

Well researched book. Very insightful and interesting One of those books that explains why we are where are in the Middle East. Highly recommend if you are interested in US policy and error in the Middle East.
Serious reading for understanding how USA has been off track in Middle East with recent arms ultimately destroying Kurdish villages. The review of American policy failure regarding the past 45 years with Iran and Iraq is particularly important for American people to learn and understand. Great book!
Why do they hate us?
That's a question many Americans have asked, particularly since Sept. 11, 2001. There is no simple answer. And while John Tirman's 100 Ways America is Screwing Up the World may not be specifically intended to address that question, it certainly is a step toward some comprehension of America's current stature in the court of world opinion.
The book is meant to be a liberal response to similarly titled books attacking the left. Tirman's intent, however, was to address issues and events, not personalities, be they celebrities or critics. Tirman covers everything from politics to health issues to religion to economics to pop culture. It may, however, serve best as an introduction to America's path to its problems on the global stage.

To be glib, it makes you realize how the action movies and news coverage of your youth all tied into a relatively blatant attempt by US political and military policy to dehumanize civilians of other countries and thereby reduce how seriously their deaths were treated by a country that styles itself as a city upon a hill.
