"I am a spider stuck in a web,
surrounded by dewdrop questions.
Every move I make
sends answers I don't like
splashing deep enough
to drown me"

A very well written novel in verse. And I love the title!

My only note is that it was more about the main characters family than it was about the desegregation of Texas schools in the 1970s. That doesn't make it any less good-I was just anticipating more if the poems to deal with school based on the summary.… (mer)

Toalson’s debut novel-in-verse is poignant, plucky, and plum full of rich images. Set in Houston, Texas in 1972 we are introduced to Paulie, his sister Charlie, and their family during the days of school desegregation.
Started during my lunch break today, and finished tonight. A compelling story!

Good story

I enjoyed the story very much. I hope to find the rest and read them also. Good luck to the author.

Told more in the form of poetry than prose The Colors of the Rain tells the story of Paulie and his sister Charlie whose abusive father is murdered one night defending a Black man. The unfolding of the story, and Paulie's reactions, including bullying a Black boy in school hold a powerful punch. Set in the early 1970s during school desegregation, The Colors of the Rain successfully conveys the complexities of the time in a YA appropriate manner.
