Kort biografi
I’m Carolyn Turgeon, and I’m the author of novels. I’m also the editor-in-chief/part owner of Enchanted Living (formerly Faerie Magazine), a quarterly print publication.

I love travel and adventure and have attended mermaid camp at Weeki Wachee (where I swam in a tail with glamorous mermaids and a wild manatee), spent five days at a witch camp in Woodstock, and was scuba certified in Corn Island, Nicaragua, by a dive instructor from Spain, then dove with sharks in the Bahamas. I’ve visited Italy numerous times to research a new novel (and was in a PhD program at UCLA way back when, studying medieval Italian poetry) and this past spring visited a count’s private archives in the same Florence library where Hannibal Lecter worked in the Thomas Harris books. Contains more filler than The Fairy Handbook. I found myself skimming and skipping over uninteresting parts.

I keep telling myself that I won't buy any more of these books because they're just not worth it, but then I see them, and my goblin brain takes over and I end up buying yet another one. These books are really, really pretty. But there isn't enough actual info in them. This one had entire sections that had nothing to do with unicorns, not even a little bit. The actual historical parts were great, and I especially loved the section about the unicorn tapestry because I had seen them once on a school trip. This is not the book for you if you want to learn in depth about the unicorn myth/legend, but it's a gorgeous book to put on a coffee table and flip through.… (mer)

I had beautiful, enchantingly high hopes for Mermaid. I wanted it to be what I think the author originally envisioned it to be – an amazing retelling of the classic tale that added some depth, intrigue, and a few more character flaws, into the original plot. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I still award three stars, simply for the fact that it held my attention. I read through it quite quickly as I kept waiting for it to turn into something amazing, but then encountered a lackluster ending, put it down and just said, “Huh.” On to the next book I guess.

Like most fairy tales, our female protagonists profess great love for the prince despite hardly knowing him, and Lenia, the mermaid, gives up everything for a handsome, unconscious human, and then unrealistically expects him to fall in love with her. The prince, being a philandering human with fully functioning anatomy, takes advantage of this gorgeous woman throwing herself at him, and she mistakes this act for deep and enduring love. Boring and predictable and this does not elevate the retelling or rectify the issues I had with the Disney movie. Hopefully must adult women reading this book are intelligent enough to realize that they do not want to be like the mermaid – they should aim to be more like Margrethe, Lenia’s rival for Prince Christopher’s affection.

Well, not really, but if you’re going to pick one of the two women to focus on as a better role model, Margrethe is a clear winner. Brought up in a convent for her own protection, she encounters the prince first when she discovers him on the beach where Lenia saved him. She nurses him back to health, and then later realizes that if she marries him, she might save her country from the ceaseless wars they’ve been fighting with Christopher’s kingdom. Additionally, she realizes that she doesn’t actually love Christopher, but realizes she will be serving the greater good, not her own selfish desires. Does this actually make her a better human? I don’t know. But she does agree to raise Lenia and Christopher’s daughter which is at least a little admirable. Either way, I’ve already ordered Carolyn’s next book and hope that it will be more satisfying than this one!

Like Mermaid before it, I enjoyed the combination and twist of multiple fairy tales wound together, in this case, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, as well as Turgeon's storytelling. By a twist of fate, and more than a little scheming on Mathena's (Mother Gothel's) part, Rapunzel finds herself stepmother to Snow White. However, instead of being the purely evil queen the character has been portrayed as in previous reimaginings of the classic tale, Rapunzel really wants to have a happy, perfect family with the King, Josef, and Snow White.

Unfortunately, Rapunzel eventually discovers she has been nothing more than a pawn in her mother's plan for revenge against the monarchy and she falls prey to the jealousy of Snow White stereotypical of the evil stepmother archetype. Thus ensues the expected plan to eradicate the beloved Snow White. Also, like Mermaid, the twist is a dark one and a happy ending is far from guaranteed.

Fairest of Them All took me over a month to read, a mark that I was struggling a bit to make it through and my only complaint is that far too little actually happens in Turgeon's retelling for the fact that it spans nearly two decades. While backstory is important, here the same information could have been covered in flashbacks or another more palatable method.
