The book by Prof. Irena Turnau, outstanding specialist in the history of textile industry and clothing, is the first attempt to synthetically present a development of hand-felting in Europe Asia
The author presents a long history of hand-felting. For several thousand years up to the present people in many Asian countries have made yurt coverings, furnishings for living interiors, and articles of clothing. As for Europe, home-made felt used for individual needs was not so important. From the Middle Ages to the 19th century specialised guilds provided people with one-colour hats, caps, warm feetwear and rain covers. Only Asians could produce coloured felts and for a few decades of the 20th century their skill has been inspiring artists on all continents. The technique of stamping wet wool or animal hair, thus matted permanently together, has not lost its significance and provides beautiful and useful objects… (mer)
