A very thorough examination of high command during the May 1940 campaign. The author is mainly concerned with the Allied headquarters and governments, so don't expect much military detail, or even discussion of the German side. You do get an insight in how the decisions on the Allied side were taken (or failed to be taken).
The author lays the blame for the defeat squarely on French High Command, closely followed by the French government. Being Belgian, he skirts around some thorny issues in the national history, notably the rift between the King and his ministers and the decision for the armistice.
Thoroughly recommended, especially if you want to know what was wrong with the French Army of 1940.… (mer)
