Cynthia Voigt was born on February 25, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. She received a bachelor's degree from Smith College, did graduate work at St. Michael's College, and later received a teacher's certification from Christian Brothers College. After college, she worked for an advertising agency. visa mer Before becoming a full-time author, she was a secretary and a high school English teacher. Her first book, Homecoming, was published in 1981. Her children's books address such issues at child abuse and racism, topics that are not often talked about in books designed for children. She is the author of numerous books including the Bad Girls series, the Tillerman Cycle series, and the Kingdom series. She won the Notable Children's Trade Book in the field of social studies for Homecoming, the Newbery Medal, ALA in 1983 for Dicey's Song, and the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1984 for The Callender Papers. Voigt deftly portrays characters with depth and complexity. There is no sugar-coating of the working-class American family, nor shying away from racial tensions on the personal level during de-segragation. Satisfying read in every way.
Growing up in a traditional nuclear family I seldom tried to imagine any other reality. Voigt's Tillerman Cycle was published after my middle- and high-school tenure, when exposure to different family structures would have stretched me, to say the least, in positive ways.
With attention to the details of each character's speech, mannerisms, and interior dialog, Voigt breathes vibrant life into these memorable protagonists. The development of adolescent identity without a parent, or without both, unspools with confident pacing that kept me turning the pages.

Thoroughly satisfying read the second time through. When I first read it years ago, I was so concrete and literal in my understanding of the title that I kept looking for the passage about the song—one Dicey sings, one sung about or for her...

I think I read [b:Homecoming|12125|Homecoming (Tillerman Cycle, #1)|Cynthia Voigt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1390250078s/12125.jpg|213788] years ago. But with the passage of time, and a more mature appreciation for a road trip tale, and childhood vis a vis abandonment, this read seemed like the first. The pages just kept turning.
The next title in the series, [b:Dicey's Song|11831|Dicey's Song (Tillerman Cycle, #2)|Cynthia Voigt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1386923650s/11831.jpg|1968913] is on my nightstand, because I'm eager to know how each child fares in the next phase of their development. How do we survive childhood? How does anyone who faces the challenges of the Tillerman clan? What kind of adults will they be?
Almost, but not quite, unbelievable reading.… (mer)
