It was during a visit to the American School in Taipei that author Mary Dodson Wade became fascinated with Chinese folktales. A former teacher and elementary school librarian, she has published approximately 60 books, mostly nonfiction related to Texas history. She is a member of the Texas State Historical Association and the Texas Library Association, and lives in Houston, Texas.
The Emperor has a problem. He wants his people to remember the auspicious year in which his son was born but there is no way to keep track of the years. He devises a plan to host a race in which animals will cross a river and the first twelve animals to reach the opposite side will have a year named after them. Thus the people will be able to remember the years and the events that occurred.
This retelling of a traditional Chinese folktale explains the names of the years of the Chinese calendar. Accompanied by exquisite watercolor artwork, the story clarifies why there is No Year of the Cat.
