Jess Walter was born on July 20, 1965. He graduated from Eastern Washington University. Before becoming an author, he worked as a journalist. His work has appeared in Newsweek, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Boston Globe. From author's site: : Jess Walter is the author of THE ZERO, a finalist for the 2006 National Book Award and CITIZEN VINCE, winner of the 2005 Edgar Award for best novel, as well as two other novels and a nonfiction book. He's won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and has been a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize, the PEN USA Literary Prize, in both fiction and nonfiction, the ITW Thriller of the Year and he was part of a team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in spot news journalism. His books have been New York Times, Washington Post and NPR best books of the year and have been published in twenty countries.



20 stories, almost 23 hrs of suspense and mystery. Good narrations. My favorite is “God Bless America” starts slow but is most charming. Some have profanity others not. All are interesting, some more n others. Worthwhile reading.

This was a book club pick. I wasn’t sure what to expect… I haven’t been reading much, and I’ve really been struggling to get into anything. So imagine my surprise when I found myself at first mildly intrigued and then enthralled by this book that’s completely outside my literary comfort zone. At first I found it depressing - and even now, looking back after finishing it, I still do. I chuckled a few times, but I didn’t find it to be a “comedy”, as some interviews with Walter would have you believe. It was, perhaps, too much reality in my fiction, and I wouldn’t seek out another book like this one - or even anything else by this author. But I was intrigued enough to finish it, something I rarely say these days, and for that reason alone, it merits a higher rating than I may have given it months ago. I guess it’s true… we filter so much of what we read through our baggage and our moods and our personalities. I tend to forget just how subjective reading is until I pick up a book like this one, which reminds me.… (mer)
