Truth be told, she'd hopelessly isolated herself... In doing so, she wondered how many opportunities she'd missed out on.

Marti copes with memories of the past and her present widowhood by holding on to predictability and aloneness. But meeting a young mother and daughter in trouble brings the sameness of Marti's life to a halt in When Paths Cross by author C.L. Wells.

I was looking for something short but meaningful when I picked up this story, and that's what I got. It's a good illustration of how what we need most in life sometimes is linked to the needs of others.

The story's pacing is a bit awkward in a couple places, and it seems like one twist takes too big a leap without enough time or emotional development to keep it from feeling somewhat trite and too perfect by the end. But overall, the compassion and renewed life in this story make it worth the read.

Hard to rate a multi-author book

This compilation promised a taste of different authors and genres. It was all fairly well written, which was why I rated the four stars. But I could only get into two of the stories. Jane Lebak (author of Upsie-Daisy) and C. L. Wells (author of That's How She Rolls) These stories were excellent. I'd rate them five stars. They were funny and engaging. I tried the other stories, but wasn't drawn in right away. I find with Christian reads, that once a character goes into their thoughts and moans about life's difficulties, I lose interest. A few of the stories didn't jump into action right away either. A big turn off for me. But I found the two above stories worth the read.… (mer)

Or was there something real between them? How could she not trust him on one side, but want to trust him with everything on the other?

Sherice has become more or less content with her life in hiding, trusting no one except Jazz, her Labrador. But a nosy (and rather good-looking) man next door, Canden, begins to poke holes in the walls of privacy around Sherice's life—and her heart. She must soon decide whether letting Canden in would be worth endangering them both in Jazzy Girl by author C.L. Wells.

The first novelette I read by this author was a romantic comedy, That's How She Rolls, so I was curious about this romantic suspense read. I like how, even with its faith theme, the story doesn't provide easy, pat answers for all the tough issues in Sherice's life, nor does the story simply remain silent in those areas, as if issues and questions like that don't exist.

Even for a short and sweet read, I found some parts of this one to be a little slow. But I gained appreciation for Sherice's character the more her story unfolded, and I'll admit the very end of the book sent a rush of tears to my eyes. I'd recommend this novelette to fellow fans of romantic suspense.

I originally read this novelette in the Where the Light May Lead anthology, and I quite enjoyed this rom-com featuring a humorous heroine who's self-conscious but also self-aware. Beauty and hotness come in all different packages, folks!
