Review of the Audible Original audiobook (May 2020), part of the Audible Sleep series
I've already used up the space of one review, about Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway (1925), to describe the ASMR experience, so I won't repeat that information here.
href="https://whisperlodge.nyc/" rel="nofollow" target="_top">Whisperlodge's The Dressing Room (2020) is now 1 of 4 ASMR Audiobooks available in the Audible Sleep series. The intention of ASMR role-plays is to create a relaxing and calming experience, which for experiencers will generate the brain wave and spinal body tingles or frisson of the ASMR sensation. The methods used can vary considerably, but usually incorporate a soft spoken/whispered voice combined with frictional/tapping/rasping sounds. In these ways they simulate such real world unintentional ASMR experiences such as barbers with clippers & scissors or PBS television painter Bob Ross calming speaking while stroking a paint canvas with his brushes.
These effects can be very personal. Some ASMR works for some individuals but does not work for others. I found Amanda Wallace's performance in The Dressing Room to be extremely effective, in fact on my first hearing it produced constant tingles for the entire 46 minute performance. Re-listens will usually have some degree of immunity, as familiarity removes some of the surprise discovery of a first hearing, but the calm speaking here is still likely to produce a relaxing effect regardless.
The above will be a complete mystery to those who don't experience the sensation, but even non-experiencers may find this performance to be relaxing and calming. They have to learn to accept that soft speaking and/or whispering is part of the standard ASMR role-play practice.… (mer)
