Improvisation is a challenging skill to teach and learn through participation in the vocal jazz ensemble. Research for this project revealed that transcription is the most efficient way of teaching vocal jazz students to improvise. A handbook of fifteen transcription exercises with short excerpts from recordings was created for use by vocal jazz educators. Through completion of these exercises, students will familiarize themselves with rhythm, call-and-response, major pentatonic scale, minor pentatonic scale, Dorian mode, minor blues scale, major blues scale, chromaticism, development, gospel, and rhythm and blues (R&B).… (mer)
