John Williams's luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American, but as an unlikely existential hero, standing, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper, in stark relief against an unforgiving world.

Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes The Diesel Readers back to the store to discuss Stoner by John Williams on Monday, June 16th at 7pm.A life simply lived is rarely so simple a thing. John Williams' contemporary classic, Stoner, is as fine an example of this as we have. On the surface there is very little to distinguish William Stoner from his peers. Born of rural Missouri stock and blood, in college he is seduced into academia by a discovery of Shakespeare. His passion identified, the teaching of literature, Stoner settles into the relative anonymity of a merely capable English professor, neither highly accomplished nor lowly incompetent. What drama there is in Stoner's life never achieves the climax of a culmination -- a failed marriage that never ends, a professional conflict turned decades-long cold war -- with the exception of a love affair doomed from the start. But appearances are deceiving: this is no simple melancholic tale, but a reflection on whether the pursuit of one's passion is the same as achieving it.
This event is free and all are welcome and encouraged to attend!

William Stoner is born at the end of the nineteenth century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar’s life, so different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments: marriage into a “proper” family estranges him from his parents; his career is stymied; his wife and daughter turn coldly away from him; a transforming experience of new love ends under threat of scandal. Driven ever deeper within himself, Stoner rediscovers the stoic silence of his forebears and confronts an essential solitude.
