- Frances Winwar was born in Sicily and emigrated to the U.S. as a child in 1907. She adopted Winwar, an Anglicized version of her birth name, Vinciguerra, as her pen name. She wrote romantic novels and colorful, bestselling biographies. She was married four times, to writer Victor J. Jerome, educator Bernard Grebanier, mystery novelist Richard Wilson Webb, and classics scholar Dr. Francis D. Lazenby.
