Encyclopedia of Opera on Screen: A Guide to More… av Ken Wlaschin
Astonishingly comprehensive up to the date of publication (admittedly 20 years ago now). Covers all available filmed versions of operas as well as inclusion of major operas in popular and artistic film, and a range of associated documentaries and works. This is a wonderfully dense tome. These kinds of books can never keep up with output, and the absurd proliferation of the last 20 years has inevitably rendered such attempts a little pallid. Yet this is still great, really great.
If you're seen the iconic 1969 British film 'The Italian Job' you probably remember the Mini Coopers, the jaunty music, the quotable dialogue and that cliffhanger ending. In this novel published around the same time we still have the basic story, the Minis, and most of the dialogue. We loose, obviously, the music, and that ending. I don't know but I image Ken Wlaschin was working from Troy Kennedy Martin's original screenplay and as often happens the film-makers changed, re-shot the ending.
The book itself is well written for a novelization. And fans of the film will be glad they changed the ending.… (mer)
