James Bonham, “Biscuit,” finds himself in exile at his grandmother’s house along with his cousin Lee Ann, “L.A.” because of abuse in their respective families of origin, though no one knows exactly what happened to L.A. because she won’t speak. The two find a level of mutual accommodation and kick around the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, “unthinking,” as their Gram puts it. They discover the dead body of a girl about their own age, the victim of a serial killer as it turns out, and the resolution of this thread gradually brings to light the horror of what has been done to L.A. Meanwhile Biscuit is grappling with his own demons as the result of his father’s death, violent abuse at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend, his need to try to protect L.A. and Gram—now the only family he has--from the unknown menace that hangs in the air around them like humidity, and his own sexual awakening.
