Abstract

Some educators maintain that a well-rounded musician plays in all styles. When performing,
especially in a group setting like a concert band, orchestra, or choir, often the task of performing
in a compound meter, such as 3/8, 6/8, 9/8, or 12/8, seems like a daunting task to both educator
and student. Perhaps it is the understanding of the theoretical concept of a compound meter that
makes teachers pause when handing out literature with this denotation.
Frequently, educators wait too long to introduce this concept until it becomes something
that has to be done in order to accomplish a task in a piece of literature. This curriculum, along
with the various original compositions and exercises created for this project will help educators
incorporate compound meter into the culture of their classroom. This may be accomplished by
providing simplified and effective solutions to teaching compound meter without the problems of
expanded individual instrument range and other factors that makes educators keep their
compound meter pieces shelved indefinitely. This author has created and refined these concepts
with his beginning sixth-grade group for the last four years with measurable success.
In addition, 37 music educators responded to a survey via social media about their
experiences teaching compound meter. The respondents shared a wide variety of experiences
and opinions about the topic.
